“The Green Box,” an architectural project by Ester Bruzkus Architekten, represents a unique and innovative approach to interior design and space optimization. Situated in Berlin, Germany, this 120 square meter apartment was completed in 2020 and stands as a testament to the firm’s creative vision and architectural prowess.
At the heart of the apartment’s design is a single, complex green millwork box, which is strategically positioned at the center of the long apartment. This design choice allows for free-flowing circulation around all sides of the box, enhancing the spatial dynamics and functionality of the apartment. The box itself, lacquered in a deep green, contains all the kitchen and bathroom services, while around it, public rooms face a view of the city on two sides, and on the interior, a more private sequence of rooms for bathing.
Ester Bruzkus Architekten’s design philosophy for this project was centered on strong colors, natural materials, precise planning, and the contrasts between cool and warm elements, along with a few surprises. The use of rich colors and materials contrasts beautifully with the neutral raw concrete walls and ceilings, creating a harmonious balance between cool and warm aesthetics. The design also respects the original raw and open character of the space, which featured floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides and exposed concrete walls on the other sides.
The interior features a kitchen on one of the long sides of the green box, characterized by green quartzite and lacquered deep-green wood. The living room includes a custom-built fireplace made from reflective brass and two types of travertine, illustrating the architects’ penchant for material contrasts and surprising color combinations. In line with EBA’s design ethos, the apartment is clad in muted oak floorboards, contributing to its clean and simple look.
Peter Greenberg, a partner at Ester Bruzkus Architekten, emphasizes the importance of being a good listener to both the client and the building itself, stating that “the building tells you what it wants to be.” This philosophy guided the design of The Green Box, resulting in a logical floor plan that maintains the sense of openness and rawness of the original space while introducing new elements and materials that complement and contrast with the existing structure. The end result is an apartment that is both cool and cozy, offering a fresh and innovative take on interior design and space utilization.
