Epic Games Introduces Unreal Engine 5.2.
At the Game Developers Conference held in San Francisco, Epic Games introduced performance and useful features that make a difference for real-time 3D content and experiences.
During the State of Unreal presentation at GDC 2023, Epic Games offered a new look at the latest version of Unreal Engine 5. The Unreal Engine 5.2 demo, called Electric Dreams, looks stunning with its offerings in areas such as world formation, procedural world building, lighting, and shading.
While Epic Games’ announcements typically target developers and content creators, they shed light on the future for regular gamers as well. Let’s take a closer look at all the innovations announced by Epic Games.
Unreal Engine 5.2 will take realistic environments brought by Unreal Engine 5 to the next level. The biggest innovation coming with the new game engine version will be procedural content generation, which allows you to create worlds entirely dependent on algorithms.
At the State of Unreal event, Epic Games released a new live demo called Electric Dream for Unreal Engine 5.2. The new demo showcases impressive visual details, physics, world building, and more.
According to Epic, since the release of Unreal Engine 5 last spring, 77% of users have switched to Unreal Engine 5, and the latest version, Unreal Engine 5.2, brings more optimization and improvements along with a few new features. This allows game developers of all experience levels, whether amateur or professional, to create massive worlds in a short amount of time.
The new game engine will also feature new physics. The tires of vehicles will realistically deform, real-time water effects and physics will enter our lives.
The demo showcases the new Substrate shading system, which allows artists to create and layer different shading models for achieving levels of fidelity and quality that were not possible before Unreal Engine 5.2.
Of course, Epic notes that Unreal Engine 5.2 is a preview version, so these features are still experimental. Epic was also eager to note the latest physics developments, such as tire deformation, air suspension, and realistic fluid simulation and water processing.
Unreal Engine 5.2 Preview also comes with new in-editor and runtime Procedural Content Generation (PCG) tools, which allow artists to define rules and parameters to quickly fill an area in the environment.
The latest Unreal Engine 5.2 demo is quite impressive and will definitely lead to some impressive-looking games in the future.
